SOFIE ROTERMAN
SOFIE ROTERMAN, Belgian Textile Designer and Artist who researches the boundaries of knitting and the space between art and design.
Sofie completed her bachelor of Installation Art at KASK School of Arts, Ghent in 2018. Her profound fascination with materiality and textiles motivated her to pursue a bachelor's degree in Textile Design, which she successfully earned in 2021. Subsequently, she embarked on a Master's program, giving her the opportunity to further develop and refine her distinctive style and expertise in knitting. Sofie was awarded the Horlait dapsens prize with her master project ‘Embodied Knits’ in 2023.
Pursuing her passion for knitting, Sofie now works as a freelance textile designer for art projects, while also working part-time as an R&D product developer at a Belgian knitting mill to further broaden her expertise in the industry.

Jury report (Dutch): Sofie Roterman breit en verleidt. Onder de titel Embodied Knits presenteert ze een collectie gebreide objecten, waarbij het materiaal de vorm dicteert en omschrijving daardoor moeilijk maakt. Stekelige wezens bestaande uit bezemfilamenten, ineengedraaide Möbiusachtige banden, zwiepende structuren die je eerder in de diepzee verwacht. Deze zinnenprikkelende creaties, elegant gepresenteerd op lage quasi-Japans aandoende sokkels, vormen een ware verzoeking voor de voorbijganger. Ze doen de handen kriebelen om ze te beproeven op veerkracht, uitrekking, gewicht of de mate waarin ze knisperen en knapperen. De jury looft verder de weldoordachte regie van het videowerk, dat het breiwerk op zinvolle wijze weet te complementeren.
